Jim received his bachelor's degree from University of Louisiana, then played in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. After eight years as associate principal flutist for the Pittsburgh Symphony, he went on to play principal flute with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has worked as a studio musician for jazz and pop sessions, movies, and television, and conducted master classes and clinics in the U.S., Canada, Europe, South America, and Russia. In 1980 he formed the jazz/classical group Free Flight.
